He dropped Mimsy at her house in Bel Air. She had the punch code that opened the main gates, and he drove up the circular drive to the front of a house that looked as large as an average-sized hotel. Half a dozen cars were parked in the forecourt, and the house blazed with light. There was the sound of music coming from inside.

“Party?” he asked.

“Probably,” said Mimsy. “Mummy and Daddy can’t stand to be alone together, so there’s always someone up here.” She got out of the car before he could get out and open the door for her. She came around to the driver’s side. “Aren’t you coming in?” she asked.

“It’s late,” he said. He didn’t feel up to meeting Mummy or Daddy right now. Besides, he had other things to do. The key,” he said.

There was a moment of doubt in her eyes. She still wasn’t sure. Finally, she said, “I’ll get it.” She ran to the front door and let herself in. She was gone for five minutes. When she returned, she handed him a single key. “I hope she hasn’t changed the locks,” she said.

“Why would she do that?” asked James.

“I don’t know. People do.” She looked at him for a moment as though there was something else she wanted to say. Then she changed her mind. “ ’Night,” she said. Turning, she ran back to the front door.

He watched her until she was inside the house before heading back down the drive. The gates opened ahead of him like a medieval portcullis. He drove through, and they started to rumble shut behind him. He pointed the car down the hill toward Sunset Boulevard. It was nearly midnight, but he knew he still had a lot of day left ahead of him.

When Caroline was at home, she lived at Sierra Towers. At least, this was the address that Katherine had given him. If indeed she and Henderson had been cohabiting, then it was reasonable to assume that he lived there, too. Sierra Towers is a high-rise condominium block perched at the very edge of Beverly Hills, where Sunset Boulevard of the gracious old Hollywood homes suddenly becomes the Sunset Strip, complete with strip joints, bars, nightclubs, and twenty-four-hour liquor stores. But Sierra Towers manages to avoid the Strip by about one hundred yards. It is one of the most visible buildings in the city, and the residents like it that way. They are rich enough to own the houses they look down on from the upper floors, but for various reasons they have opted for the condominium life, with its valet parking, concierge, maid service if required, and, most important of all, its security.

James parked the car on a side street a couple of hundred yards from the building. After a moment’s hesitation, he reached into the back and took out his tennis bag. If he was stopped for any reason and the contents of the bag discovered, he would be in more trouble than he’d be able to get out of.
